The Final Finals

Well, this is it. My final finals week at Bates. I’m approaching it with a strange calm. It’s all very ‘eh, I’ve been here before’. Of course I’ll study. do my best, and not get as much sleep as I’d like, but I’m not worried. It’s really kind, in a weird kind of way, because I can compare this year’s finals weeks with my first finals week waaay back when in 2009 when I was first year and see in a really tangible way how far I’ve come. Bates has done a really great job of helping me learn not just facts, not just stuff, but how to learn; how to think through a problem, approach it from lots of different perspectives and argue for one side or another. How to approach studying, and know what to focus on. It’s really cool– nice work, Bates!

Finals Week

It’s the end of finals week. People are starting to pack up their cars and head home for April break. Some people are working right up until Friday night (poor souls). I just finished. I had two finals this morning, but after that final push, I’m done! Hooray! Here’s a breakdown of how it went down:

I had five final papers, a total of 55 pages to write, and two finals to study for. I was kind of feeling like this:

Here’s how I felt at the beginning of the week:

So I spent an absurd amount of time in the library, reading, writing and studying. In a weird way, it was relaxing. I really like studying, although not quite so much after an uninterrupted week of it.

About halfway through the week I started to feel like doing this:

By that point, I had finished all but one of my papers (a real doozy: a fifteen-pager on a feminist critique of Rawlsian deontological liberalism), and was primarily focused on my exams.

Late night breakfast was last night, that’s when Commons opens up until 11:00 pm to serve pancakes, omelets made to order, scrambled eggs, muffins and bacon. Everyone takes a study break and rejuvenation a little for the last big push. Afterwards, I finished the last paper and finished studying.

This morning, I woke up bright and early and had two finals. They both went quite well, I think. And that’s it: I’m done! Here’s how I’m feeling now:

Woohoo! Now I can spend the rest of today and tomorrow relaxing, catching up on some sleep, and maybe even go to the gym. It’s sad that another semester has ended, but it’s nice to be out of finals.
